Orthodontics for Children

Correcting those small problems early means kids can get on enjoying the other things in life.

The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends that children be seen by an orthodontist at the age of 7 years. This is because certain orthodontic problems are best treated then! These include: trapped canines, a narrow upper jaw, thumb sucking, and cross-bites. If these problems are fixed early, it may prevent any serious issues later on.

Early intervention facilitates smooth sailing in the future! -and sometimes prevents the need for braces later on.

The aim of an early visit to the orthodontist is to identify if nature has taken the wrong path and to re-direct things to the way they should be, so to allow normal growth and development of your child’s teeth and jaws. Early treatment usually involves the use of one of the following:

  • Expander
  • Plate
  • Partial braces
  • Thumb sucking deterrent device
  • Space maintainer

Even if early treatment is not necessary, we can carefully monitor the dental development of your child. That way you have the peace of mind that they are under the watchful eye of an orthodontist. These regular review visits are free! Dr. Devan usually sees kids every 6-12 months to monitor their growth (taking height and shoe size) and dental development (with regular x-rays and tooth charting). The more information we obtain about your child and their development, the easier it is to manage things later on!

Some benefits of early treatment:

  • Improved self-esteem
  • Cease harmful habits like thumb sucking (our techniques have been 100% successful everytime!)
  • Expand a small jaw while it’s still growing (vs surgery later on)
  • Correct a deficient chin
  • Improve speech impediments

At Westside Orthodontics, we aim to make Children’s Orthodontics fun. Just because treatment may be required doesn’t mean it has to be boring! We have a range of simple and colourful appliances for children from sparkling upper removable plates to tiny metal springs to move teeth.
