Functional Appliances

Maximising Growth Potential

Orthodontics is more than just straightening teeth.

funtional-appliance-2Sometimes the jaws may not align properly, with the lower jaw being deficient. In this case a functional appliance may be ideal.

Functional appliances posture the lower jaw forward and accelerate its growth to a more normal size. They also retract protruding upper teeth to a proper angulation.

Functional appliances are thus perfect for young growing children about 10-12 years of age with a large overjet or horizontal overlap of the teeth.

There are two types of functional appliances available:

  • Removable functional appliances like the Clark Twin Block:
The Clark Twin Block consists of two components: an upper acrylic plate and a lower acrylic plate. When you bite down together on the two, the lower jaw is moved forward. Overtime, this will improve the bite and the jaw length.
  • Fixed functional appliances like the Forus™ spring:
The Forsus™ device consists of two springs that are attached on either side of the mouth. They are looped around the braces and when you bite down, the spring is compressed, applying a gentle forward force to the lower teeth and jaw!
