In cases where the upper jaw is too narrow an expander may be the best solution.
These devices are glued onto the teeth to slowly expand the jaw. The technical name for them is a rapid maxillary expander or RME.
RMEs are fitted to the upper first molars. There is a tiny screw incorporated in the middle which patients turn once a day to gently expand the smile. RMEs are usually used to correct a crossbite and create space to fit in all the teeth prior to braces. When used in young children they can be quite effective as the bones are still growing and easy to expand.
After the orthodontist has achieved the desired expansion, the expander is usually left in place for 9 months to allow the jaw to stabilize.
