Functional appliances are devices that modify jaw growth.
Sometimes the jaws may not align properly, with the lower jaw being small. In this case a functional appliance may be ideal.
Functional appliances posture the lower jaw forward and accelerate its growth to a more favourable size. They also retract protruding upper teeth into a proper angulation.
Functional appliances are thus perfect for young growing children about 12 ½ years of age with a large overjet or horizontal overlap of the teeth.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF FUNCTIONAL APPLIANCES AVAILABLE:
Removable functional appliances like the Clark Twin Block:
The Clark Twin Block consists of two components: an upper acrylic plate and a lower acrylic plate. When you bite down together on the two, the lower jaw is moved forward. Overtime, this will improve the bite and the jaw length.
Fixed functional appliances:
These are fixed to the teeth and apply a gentle forward force to the lower teeth and jaw! They are great for patients where compliance is non-ideal.
